Friday afternoon: the 10-year is back under 5%, oil is not settled, and Wednesday’s Fed meeting is the next print

Filed Saturday 24 October in Asia, while Friday’s US cash session was still open. The 10-year Treasury yield was back just under 5%, oil wires did not agree on a Brent price, and the Federal Reserve’s 27–28 October meeting was the next scheduled policy print.

Filed Saturday 24 October 2026 in Asia. In New York it was still Friday afternoon, and the US cash equity session had not finished. What follows is a rates note built only from published wire readings, not from an exchange settlement file.

The yield that matters for this desk#

At the European close, Reuters reported the 10-year US Treasury yield up 4.2 basis points at 4.9945%, and the two-year yield up 5.7 basis points at 4.6924%. Yahoo Finance’s live blog, updated at 2:45 p.m. New York time, said the 10-year had risen and was still below 5%.

Thursday’s move is worth separating from Friday’s. CoinDesk described a 19 basis point drop in the 10-year on Thursday and called it the largest one-day decline since March 2023. A Reuters market file described that same Thursday drop as the largest in nearly four years. Those are two newsroom descriptions of one session. This note does not merge them into a single official ranking.

The level itself is the point. A 10-year yield sitting just under 5%, after a violent rally and a partial give-back, is a different funding backdrop from a yield that has already been accepted as through 5%. Mortgages, dollar credit and the discount rate on long projects all key off that neighbourhood. Friday had not produced a close when this was written.

Oil is an inflation input only if the quote is real#

Oil is the other half of the rates story, and Friday’s public quotes did not agree.

CNBC reported Brent up 2.9% at $116.46 a barrel after a $117.45 print, the highest since 30 April, with WTI about 3.7% higher at $103.12. Reuters, in its European-close file, had Brent up 3.51% at $117.14 and WTI up 3.53% at $102.98. Yahoo Finance at 2:45 p.m. New York time had Brent hovering near $112 and WTI at $103, and called the complex near a five-month high.

A four-dollar gap in Brent across the same afternoon is large enough to change a “highest since April” headline. Until the futures settlement is published, the honest statement is narrower: Friday’s wires agreed that crude was elevated and that Middle East supply risk was the reason being given, and they did not agree on the Brent price.

CNBC attributed the bid to Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia, to remarks from Iran’s army chief carried by Tasnim, and to expectations among traders of further US strikes. Those are the reported motives. They are not a forecast from this desk.

What Wednesday can and cannot settle#

Reuters reported that the Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, and that the next policy statement is due on Wednesday. CoinDesk dated that meeting 27–28 October. Late on Thursday, Reuters said LSEG fed-funds futures implied only a 5% chance of another hike at Wednesday’s statement and an 80% chance of a hike at the December meeting. Reuters also quoted Walter Todd of Greenwood Capital on what Chair Kevin Warsh might say about December.

A 5% probability and an 80% probability are prices in a futures market at one moment. They move when oil, surveys or earnings change. The University of Michigan’s final October sentiment index edged down to 48.0 from 48.1, CoinDesk reported, while one-year inflation expectations rose to 4.7% from 4.6% and longer-run expectations rose to 3.5% from 3.4%. Reuters quoted survey director Joanne Hsu saying sentiment was about 10% lower than a year ago and about 15% lower than in February, before the conflict with Iran.

The meeting can confirm or reject the Wednesday hold that futures were pricing. It cannot turn Friday’s unsettled oil quotes into a settlement, and it cannot make an 80% December probability into a promise.

Nothing here is a rate forecast or a solicitation to trade Treasuries, oil or the dollar.

Frequently asked questions

Has the Federal Reserve already decided the October meeting?

No. Reuters reported that the policy statement is due on Wednesday, at a meeting CoinDesk dated 27–28 October. The figures in this note are market prices and wire readings from Friday, not the decision.

Did the 10-year yield close above 5% on Friday?

Not in the readings available when this note was filed. Reuters put it at 4.9945% at the European close, and Yahoo Finance’s 2:45 p.m. New York live blog said the yield had risen but was still below 5%. The US cash bond close is a separate print.

Why are the oil prices in different stories different?

They were taken at different times by different desks. CNBC, Reuters and Yahoo Finance each published a Friday reading, and those readings do not match. The futures settlement is the number that ends the argument, and this desk does not have it.
